A local middle school student at a northwest Las Vegas school is expected to face expulsion after a search of his computer after a MAP testing session revealed that he had been using outside sources to cheat on his testing session.
Rex Butterfield, 14, received one of the top scores in his 8th grade class at Escobedo Middle School, placing him near the top percentile of all 8th graders in Nevada. However, after some of his teachers voiced suspicion after his test scores were so much higher than any of his peers, unusual for a student at Escobedo, one of the lowest ranking schools in Nevada.
A search concluded that Butterfield had engaged in internet searches during the test about material directly related to the content. Butterfield was among 53 students caught in the cheating operation carried out by administration at Escobedo Middle School, however no student had been revealed to the extent that was as egregious as Butterfield’s score was.
Butterfield and many other students are expected to face expulsion from Escobedo for their roles in the cheating operation. A spokesperson for the school described the situation as one to avoid, but one that is not surprising to see in Escobedo, even for a student like Rex Butterfield who was previously described as a “model student.”
We reached out for further comment to Escobedo Middle School but did not receive any further feedback on the situation.
