A wave of software piracy arrests have been occuring across the U.S. over the past few months due to a new FCC rule, giving more freedom for software providers to access information of user downloads.
McAfee, famed security and antivirus software provider, has taken this to the next level by partnering with Cox, Comcast, ATT, and more internet providers to obtain the names and home address from the IP address that have downloaded pirated copies off the dark web.
Channel 33 News has just learned that local West Chester man, Bryan Koegel, will be the first resident investigated.
Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan was available for comment and had this to say. “We cannot allow the hard work that companies and their employees put into their products to be so blatantly ripped off. West Chester is a community of honor and trust, which Mr. Koegel has none. I will personally see to it that he becomes an example of what happens when you go down a wrong path. I’m currently working with the local Judge to obtain a warrant and search his home. We’re very worried that antivirus software is the least of our concern in that home. With Mr. Koegel’s age and race, there’s a high percentage he may be part of a Child Pornography ring. Let me tell you this, he will be prosecuted to the highest extent of the law, and spend the rest of his days in prison where men like that are not treated very kindly. He’ll have to sleep with his butt against the wall every night.”.
Channel 33 News will be closely monitoring this case and will continue to provide up to the minute updates.
