17-year-old killed, another 17-year-old arrested and charged after shootout on east side

Columbus police say the 17-year-old boy was shot and killed after a shootout with another 17-year-old boy in southeast columbus. Police said the shooting happened around 6:51 p.m Thursday on Marion Place in the Pine Tree Apartments. Officers found the 17-year-old boy suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was taken to Mt. Carmel East where he was pronounced dead around 7:40 p.m. The other 17-year-old boy was self-transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital. He was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg, and then arrested and charged with murder. Police say the person who drove the second 17-year-old boy to Children’s Hospital remained at the hospital for questioning.

During the investigation, police revealed that the first 17-year-old shot the other in the leg after a altercation. Police say The 17-year-old boy who is charged with murder was able to return fire, striking the teen in the torso before collapsing. Witnesses say the teen tried to rob the other teen over money and shot him in the leg and the teen charged with murder returned fire.

One neighborhood says “he shot back in self defense”

Police also revealed that the 17-year-old boy who is charged told kids outside to go behind the apartments to avoid the shots.
