Still in the wake of the devastating COVID-19, emerges a new concern that sounds like science fiction, but it is not.
The CDC has identified a new pathogen, Pithovirus Sibericum. Officials say that it was once encapsulated in the Russian Ice Caps, but they now have begun seeing infections. The WHO says that more than 600 people have been confirmed to have the infection in Russia and cases are now being seen across Europe, Asia and Central America. The CDC says that it has confirmed 2 cases in New York City, and 1 in Atlanta, Ga, but expect that number to grow.
The virus is highly infectious and cause alarming symptoms. The CDC says that the virus causes Hemorrhagic Fevers and causes people to become manic, losing control of their senses and motor skills.
Dr. Mikhail Albertovich Murashko, the Russian Minister of Health, says that he hasn’t seen anything like this. He compares the symptoms like that of rabies or zombies. “I know this will sound fiction, but they act like zombies,” the health minister says: “they lose their motor control and sense of humanity and seem to mindlessly attack”.
The CDC says that while this virus spreads very quickly, reason for alarm is still minimal. “While we still know very little about this pathogen and it’s affects, we urge the American people not to panic,” says Rochelle Paula Walensky, Director of the CDC: “while the symptoms are alarming, I want to remind Americans that we are on top of this and their are currently only a few confirmed cases in the United States.”
