Benaissa Mohamed was recently identified as the mastermind behind a massive email spamming operation. The Tangier, Morocco resident had been eluding authorities for months, but his identity has finally been revealed and he is now facing federal charges.
This alleged email marketer had taken advantage of Gmail and Hotmail addresses to send out thousands of emails daily to unsuspecting recipients in an effort to make money from affiliate links. His messages were often disguised as important notifications from well-known companies, prompting users to click on them and buy products or services.
Mohamed’s campaign had grown so large that it was one of the top five senders of email spam globally. Federal investigators tracked him down after tracking suspicious IP addresses linked with his scam and found evidence linking him directly to the crime.
