Rick Pitino was found early this morning, Jan 2, 2023, unconscious in his home. His death was later confirmed by St. Joseph’s Hospital. This has been confirmed by Andy Katz.
Pitino led Kentucky to an NCAA championship in 1996. He is the only coach to lead three different schools (Providence, Kentucky, and Louisville) to a Final Four. In 2013, he was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
He currently was the coach of the Iona Gaels, but his assistant, Ricky Johns will take over for the rest of the 22-23 season.
His son, Richard, said that his family is saddened by the passing of his father and wishes for his legacy as a “legendary basketball coach” to live on.
