Smith, 18, and Williams, 25, both members of the “Hoover Criminals” street gang, according to gang unit investigators could allegedly be involved in several gang related murders due to lyrics in rap music and also posts via Facebook and Instagram.
The victim, 22-year-old Nayshawn Singleton, and his mother had been outside playing with kids — ages 10, 8 and 3 — when they allegedly noticed 18-year-old Demario Smith with 25-year-old Deonvonte Williams walking down the street about 1:30 p.m.,
Singleton, a “Rollin’ 60s Crips gang member, recognized both Demario Smith and Deonvonte Williams as killers in a rival gang, prosecutors said, adding that witnesses referred to Smith as “Lil Bezzal.”
Singleton and his mother thought Smith was dangerous and decided to bring the younger kids inside, Cooper added. As they both gathered the kids’ toys outside their home, Smith walked back toward the house with a black hoodie pulled tightly around his face, according to Cooper.
Witnesses recognized Smith, prosecutors said, because the top of his face was visible.
As Singleton reached for his sister’s bicycle, Smith allegedly opened fire, striking Singleton eight times, Cooper said. All three children and the mother were still outside when the shooting occurred.
Another incident in particular involved the death of Tyjere Hollins, 17, who was also allegedly shot by Demario Smith, June 1 outside of 1711 Pendleton Street, police said.
Smith, 18, an known active gang member of the “Hoover Criminals” street gang who’s part of an ongoing conflict between three gang factions: the “Tay Tay Gang Rollin’ 60s Crips”, the “Crank Town Hoover Criminals”, and the “E-Bezzel Gang Grape Street Crips”, is or “may” be allegedly involved in over 14 plus gang related shootings with 8 of them being homicides according to FBI and gang unit interrogators.
Smith, however is not charged for any alleged murders.
