BREAKING: Kangaroos Escape from Smithsonian National Zoo

A kangaroo escaped from it’s enclosure in the Smithsonian National Zoo late Friday evening.

Baxter, a young kangaroo at the zoo, was spotted by multiple drivers along Rock Creek Park late Friday evening, heading toward Chain Bridge.

“[Braden] said, ‘There’s a kangaroo on the side of the road!’ I was like what are you talking about? I turn around, and sure enough, there was a kangaroo,” Ethan Nelson told ABC7.

Handlers at the Zoo suspect Baxter escaped with the help of a parrot named Thor, who has learned to open doors and has aided in the escape of other animals from the zoo in the past, Smithsonian representatives told ABC7 reporters.

The animal has yet to be captured and returned to the zoo, if anyone in the Washington, D.C. or surrounding area see the animal do not approach and call the animal rescue hotline at (347) 266-8818.

This is an ongoing story, check back for updates.
