Berkeley, CA – The president of Delta Upsilon fraternity at the University of California, Berkeley, Ben Tolson, is currently under investigation for alleged hazing practices within the fraternity.
The investigation began after several reports were made to the university’s administration regarding Delta Upsilon’s initiation rituals. The allegations claim that new members were subjected to extreme physical and mental challenges, including excessive alcohol consumption and sleep deprivation.
The university’s Greek Life Office has confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that they are taking the allegations seriously. In a statement released to the press, a university spokesperson said, “UC Berkeley is committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment for all students. We take allegations of hazing very seriously and will thoroughly investigate any reports that come to our attention.”
Delta Upsilon’s national organization has also released a statement condemning hazing and expressing their support for the university’s investigation. “We do not tolerate hazing in any form and have a zero-tolerance policy for such behavior. We fully support the University of California, Berkeley’s investigation and will cooperate with any inquiries.”
Tolson has not yet released a statement regarding the allegations. The fraternity’s executive board has also declined to comment at this time.
