It’s a well-known fact that old people have certain quirks and preferences that might seem strange to the younger generations. One of these quirks has become particularly noticeable at Starbucks locations across the country: old people seem to have an obsession with the dome lids.
Yes, that’s right. While younger folks might prefer the flat lids or even the new strawless lids that Starbucks has been rolling out, the elderly population can’t seem to get enough of those plastic domes. And they’re not shy about letting everyone know it.
“I don’t know what these young whippersnappers are thinking with their flat lids and their straws,” says 85-year-old Margaret Johnson. “Give me a good old-fashioned dome lid any day. It just feels more secure, you know?”
Margaret is not alone in her love for the dome lid. According to a recent survey of Starbucks customers over the age of 65, 89% said they preferred the dome lid to any other option.
So why the dome lid obsession? Some speculate that it’s simply a matter of habit. After all, Starbucks has been using the dome lids for decades, so it’s what many older customers are used to.
Others suggest that the dome lid just feels more substantial and less likely to spill. “I don’t want my coffee sloshing all over the place,” says 73-year-old Harold Brown. “The dome lid keeps everything in place.”
And then there are those who just like the way the dome lid looks. “It’s like a little hat for my coffee,” says 77-year-old Beverly Thompson. “Who wouldn’t love that?”
Whatever the reason, it’s clear that the dome lid is here to stay for the older generation of Starbucks customers. So the next time you see an elderly person clutching their cup with a dome lid, don’t be surprised. Just smile and know that they’re enjoying their coffee the way they like it.
