CANTON, NY — St. Lawrence University student Gifford Campbell from Rochester, New York, was arrested on Monday and is currently under investigation for an alleged assault on Wheatley Sutro from New Canaan, Connecticut, a minor from Trinity College. The incident took place at the address of 13 College Street located in Canton, New York.
According to sources close to the investigation, the incident occurred on Saturday night at the 13 College Street location in downtown Canton. Witnesses reported seeing Campbell and Sutro engaged in a verbal altercation that escalated into a physical altercation, resulting in injuries to Sutro.
Sutro, who is under the age of 18, was treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and later released.
Campbell is currently being held on a $250,000 bail, and has been charged with assault. The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed pending the outcome of the investigation.
In a statement released by St. Lawrence University, the school expressed concern for the well-being of all involved and is cooperating fully with law enforcement. The university also stated that it will be conducting its own internal investigation and taking appropriate action in accordance with its policies and procedures.
Trinity College has not yet commented on the incident.
