A red flag and a no swim zone sign has been placed on a popular Norfolk beach after crab fisherman reported that they have seen a great white shark, Terry a crab fisherman who owns and operates a crab boat called Sea Mist sent a warning to the coastguard after he encountered the shark while retrieving one of his crab pots, He said it was just a normal day and that the crab fishing wasn’t too great but then out of nowhere just as I was about to bring in my next pot a huge shark grabbed onto the crab pot and literally cut it in half. I have been fishing this coast line for over 30 years and have never seen this before, the shark was massive and straight away I knew it was a great white shark. I just froze and my deck hand Toby was just shaking. After the shock of what had happened I called the coast guard so they could warn anyone that was in the area as I may have lost a crab pot but I didn’t want anyone to lose a limb let alone their life, This is something we will never forget and hope never to see again and the response from the coast guards was amazing and it just cements the bond that we as fishermen and the coast guard have.
We contacted the Uk East Coast research team to see if they knows about sharks in the area but we are still waiting for a reply.
A message from the Coast Guard, we have three flags, blue (water is safe and clean), blue and green (water is safe but has algee blooms) and red (hazard do not enter the water).
Keep these in mind next time you visit the Norfolk coast line.
