Salt Lake City: Thursday morning Utah Governor Spencer Cox invited federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to increase enforcement actions across the state and vowed to “crack down” on illegal firearms ownership. Cox referenced a “general disregard for authority” involving a recently effected rule defining short-barreled rifles. The Governor specifically asked for homes in the Mill Creek neighborhood of Salt Lake City be targeted for enforcement action. This comes amongst a national conversation around gun violence and so called assault-weapons. So far in 2023 the ATF has made 21 arrests related to federal firearms charges in Utah.
